OBSERVATION OF LYMAN - ~ t EMISSION IN INTERPLANETARY SPACE
نویسنده
چکیده
The extraterrestrial Lyman-a emission was mapped by the OGO 5 satellite, when it was ABSTRACT outside the geocorona. Three maps, obtained at different periods of the year, are presented and analyzed. The results suggest that at least half of the emission takes place in the solar system, and give strong support to the theory that in its motion towards the apex, the sun crosses neutral atomic hydrogen of interstellar origin, giving rise to an apparent interstellar wind.

SMALL COMETS' IMPLICATIONS FOR INTERPLANETARY LYMAN a
If small comets are as numerous in the inner solar system as Prank et al. [1986a] have recently proposed, large and easily detectable amounts of hydrogen would be generated in interplanetary space. Inhibition of water vapor production by a factor of 3 x 10 -9 by very thick dust mantles would be necessary to prevent excitation of a detectable interplanetary Lyman a glow. Other optical problems a...
متن کاملAeronomy, a 20th Century emergent science: the role of solar Lyman series
Aeronomy is, by definition, a multidisciplinary science which can be used to study the terrestrial atmosphere, as well as any planetary atmosphere and even the interplanetary space. It was officially recognized in 1954 by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. The major objective of the present paper is to show how aeronomy developed since its infancy. The subject is so large that a...
متن کاملIUE OBSERVATIONS OF NE 'ff!UNE FOR H LYMAN-c• EMISSION
Neptune has been observed on seven occasions with the International Ultraviolet Explorer Observatory (IUE, Boggess et al. 1978) in an attempt o detect planetary H Ly-a line emission. The observing technique is the same as previously employed in IUE observations of Uranus, described in detail by Clarke et al. (1986), and consists of spatial separation of the planetary emission from background ge...
متن کاملObservation of Electrons from the Decay of Solar Flare Neutrons
We have found evidence for fluxes of energetic electrons in interplanetary space on board the ISEE-3 spacecraft which we interpret as the decay products of neutrons generated in a solar flare on 1980 June 21. The decay electrons arrived at the s/c shortly before the electrons from the flare and can be distinguished from the latter by their distinctive energy spectrum. The time profile of the de...
متن کاملEssential observations of the Lyman continuum
Concurrent observations of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman α (Lyα) emission escaping from star-forming systems at low redshift are essential to understanding the physics of reionization at high redshift (z & 6). Some have suggested reionization is dominated by numerous small galaxies with LyC escape fractions fe ∼ 10%, while others suggest mini-quasars with higher fe might also play a role. At ...
